How to become a Social Worker in U.S. Virgin Islands
Step 1: Complete a CSWE-accredited Social Work program
Step 2: Obtain Your Masters Social Worker (LMSW) License
- Fill out the application: https://dlca.vi.gov/boardcertifications/steps/swrequirements/
- $50 registration fee (non-refundable)
- Completed and notarized application
- Official college transcript identifying courses and degrees in the field of social work directly from the institution
- Two professional references as to the applicant's current occupational level and to applicant's experience in the social work field
- One character reference
- Three 2x2 passport size photos of applicant
- Contact the ASWB to register for the Masters Level Exam
- Contact Pearson VUE to schedule exam appointment

Step 3: Accrue the Required Work Experience
- Acquire 2 years of supervised clinical social work overseen by a state-approved clinical supervisor
Step 4: Obtain the ASWB Clinical (LCSW) License

LCSW Continuing Education Requirements
License Renewal
- Renewal Cycle: Every 2 years from the date of licensure
- Total Hours Required: 24 hours (12 per calendar year)
- Must include:
- 3 hours Ethics
- 3 hours Domestic Violence
- 3 hours Cultural Sensitivity

Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT)
How to become a MFT in U.S. Virgin Islands
Step 1: Earn Your Degree
- Master’s in MFT or related field from COAMFTE- or Board-approved school
Step 2: Accrue Supervised Clinical Experience
- One year of supervised practicum or internship and graduate-level course work
- No fewer than 3 years of post-academic degree experience in a professional setting
- including a minimum of 2,500 hours of professional counseling, as defined in section 201 of the laws and rules of the DLCA
- 1,000 of these hours must involve direct client contact regarding marriage and family therapy
- a minimum of 300 hours of supervised experience under an approved supervisor directly relating to marriage and family therapy
Step 3: Pass AMFTRB National MFT Exam
- Apply to take the AMFTRB National MFT Exam
- Sign up for TDC’s NMFT exam prep course and study with confidence!
Step 4: Apply for LMFT Licensure
- Licensure applications can be found and submitted to CCE Global at https://cce-global.org for review
- Submit all information and documentation of credentials requested by the Board Pay a non-refundable fee
- Be at least 21 years of age, of good moral character, and not have been convicted of a felony or a crime of moral turpitude and must not be addicted to alcohol or drugs
- Produce certified transcripts verifying satisfactory completion of educational course work or academic degrees as required
- Have declared to the Board and agreed to continue the area of professional competence through a statement of professional intent, describing the intended use of the license, the client population with whom the application will work, the professional procedures the applicant plans to utilize, including the applicant’s theoretical orientation and preferred intervention strategies
- Have validated the competencies declared in the Statement of Professional Intent as well as demonstrated knowledge of the appropriate professional counseling field by passing a written examination given by the Board twice a year in the Virgin Islands at times to coincide with the exam date given by the National Certifying Boards of the respective disciplines in the United States whose exams are employed by the Board.
LMFT Continuing Education Requirements
- Visit the DLCA website (www.dlca.vi.gov) and follow the steps in order to obtain a reference number
- Renewal Cycle: A minimum of 5 CE units per year are required.
