How to become a Social Worker in Texas
Step 1: Complete a CSWE-accredited Social Work program
Step 2: Register and Pass the ASWB Masters Level Exam
- First, contact the ASWB, apply and be accepted
- Then, contact Pearson VUE to set an exam appointment
- Next, sign up with TDC’s LMSW Exam Prep: ASWB Masters Level Exam to study and pass with confidence!
Step 3: Complete Arizona Social Work License application and Accrue Hours
- Download and review the state LCSW application. There is also a helpful Resource Guide on the ABBH’s website. The application includes:
- Submission of official school transcripts in a sealed envelope sent directly from your CSWE-accredited college to the Board.
- Background questionnaire, including criminal history, court orders, treatment documentation, reports from medical practitioners, etc.
- Employment history for the previous 10 years
- $250 application fee.
- Verification of supervised work experience and clinical supervision
- Accrue 3,200 hours of supervised work experience over a two-year period, at least 1,600 of those hours must be direct client interaction.
- 100 hours of supervised clinical work, with at least 50 of those hours supervised by a clinical social worker. The other 50 can be supervised by another qualified professional.
Step 4: Register for the ASWB Clinical Exam and Study with Confidence!
- Register for the licensing exam with the ASWB and then Pearson VUE to select your date and location
- Finally, purchase TDC’s LCSW Exam Prep: ASWB Clinical Level Exam
LCSW Continuing Education Requirements
Pre-licensure-Social workers in CA have certain requirements, which is likely the case in other states as well.
License Renewal
- Renewal Cycle: Every 2 years
- Total Hours Required: 36 hours
- Must include:
- 6 hours of Law & Ethics (every cycle)
- Suicide Risk Assessment & Intervention Training (one-time, 6 hours)
- Telehealth (one-time trainings for new applicants)

Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT)
How to become a MFT in Texas
Step 1: Earn Your Degree
- Master’s in MFT or related field from COAMFTE- or Board-approved school
- (Must include a supervised clinical practicum or internship, with a minimum of 700 hours, including 280 direct client contact hours)
Step 2: Accrue Supervised Clinical Experience
- Completion of two years of full time supervised work experience
- Must include at least 3,000 hours of board-approved, supervised marriage and family therapy practice experience
- 1,500 hours must be in direct clinical services, with 750 hours of working with couples or families
- 200 hours must be directly supervised
- 100 must be individual supervision
- Up to 500 hours may be transferred from the practicum completed during a COAMFTE accredited doctoral program.
- Completion of 200 hours of direct supervision
- 100 must be individual
Step 3: Pass 2 Required Exams
- Apply to take the AMFTRB National MFT Exam
- Exam fee $365
- Sign up for TDC’s NMFT exam prep course and study with confidence!
- After passing the written exam, Tennessee requires an oral examination administered by a committee approved by the board.
Step 4: Apply for LMFT Licensure
- Submit supervised hours
- Proof of Completion of Texas Jurisprudence Exam for MFT
- AMFTRB exam results
- Submit official transcripts
- Pay licensure application fee $250
LMFT Continuing Education Requirements
CE Requirements for Texas MFTS
License Renewal
- Renewal Cycle: Every 2 years
- Total Hours Required: 30 hours
- Must include:
- 6 hours ethics
- 3 hour cultural diversity
- 2 hours Telehealth, if performing Teletherapy
- 1 Human Trafficking Course
- 15 hours allowed through self-study course or pre-recorded webinar
