HIV/AIDS Beyond the Stigma (7 CE hours)

Course Summary

Led by an instructor who has cared for individuals with HIV since the onset of the epidemic, this comprehensive 7-hour course fulfills the Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) first renewal requirement in HIV/AIDS training. This course provides clinicians with the following: 
  • an increased understanding of HIV/AIDS and how to support affected clients in clinical practice
  • an understanding of how the HIV/AIDS stigma affects prevention, treatment, and services
  • an exploration of ethical and legal issues, therapy strategies, resources, and appropriate referrals through nine client scenarios
  • deeper insight into the issues through personal stories shared by individuals living with HIV/AIDS

Instructors

Jocelyn Archer, RN, B.A.N., M.Div.
Jocelyn Archer, RN, B.A.N, M.Div.
Jocelyn Archer, RN, B.A.N, M.Div. Ms. Archer has been involved in the care and counselling of HIV patients since the beginning of the epidemic in 1986. As an AIDS Nurse Clinician and Case Manager at a major University Medical Center, she supported and coordinated care for hundreds of HIV/AIDS patients as they progressed through their illnesses. She also tested and counseled hundreds of HIV-positive individuals. Ms. Archer co-authored three major AIDS research articles, one of which was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). Ms. Archer has held several administrative positions in the health care profession, including Director of Clinical Services, Director of Quality, and Director of Education.

Who should take this course

This course is designed for social workers, marriage and family therapists, and professional counselors at all levels of experience who wish to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, including those living with HIV/AIDS. This course is also designed for any mental health provider who wishes to be an advocate for any individual, family, group, organization, or community affected by HIV/AIDS.

If you are an AMFT, MFT, ASW, or LCSW in California, the Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) accepts continuing education credits given through ASWB ACE-approved courses.

How to access this course

Once registered, the course will appear in the participant’s Study Center, where participants can download the handouts and listen to recorded audio lectures.

Certificate of Completion

Participants will be able to print their certificate of completion immediately after receiving a score of 80% or higher on the posttest and completing the course evaluation.
